Lemoyne, PA – Fatal Collision Between Vehicle and Train (September 29, 2026)

A fatal collision occurred around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, when a pickup truck was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train at a rail crossing near the intersection of Seventh Street and Ayers Avenue in Lemoyne, Cumberland County. The crossing sits in a residential section of the borough along the West Shore of the Susquehanna River.

West Shore Regional Police and local fire and EMS crews responded to the scene within minutes of the report. According to authorities, the force of the impact caused the pickup truck to be dragged an estimated 100 yards down the tracks before it came to a stop. The Cumberland County Coroner's Office was also called to the scene to assist in the investigation, and additional Norfolk Southern personnel were dispatched to help secure the crossing.

The driver, a 71-year-old man from the Middletown area, was removed from the vehicle and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. Norfolk Southern confirmed that the train was traveling eastbound at the time of the crash and that no injuries were reported among its crew members. The train itself was able to continue operating after the scene was cleared.

The rail crossing and the surrounding roadway were closed to traffic for several hours while investigators documented the scene, examined the crossing signals, and crews worked to clear the tracks of debris. Motorists in the West Shore area were advised to seek alternate routes during the closure, and normal traffic patterns resumed once the on-scene investigation concluded later that day. Investigators have not yet released a cause for the collision.
