A 64-year-old man from Rapho Township died Wednesday morning after the e-bike he was riding collided with a van on Long Road in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, according to East Hempfield Township police and the Lancaster County Coroner's Office.
Police said the collision happened at approximately 7:40 a.m. near the 600 block of Long Road, in the vicinity of 665 Long Road. An eastbound van struck the e-bike as its rider traveled along the roadway. The driver of the van remained at the scene following the crash and cooperated with responding officers throughout the investigation. Long Road is a two-lane roadway connecting the Landisville and Manheim areas of Lancaster County and carries a steady mix of local and commuter traffic through the morning hours.
Emergency crews transported the e-bike rider to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead in the hospital's emergency department trauma bay shortly before 9 a.m. A coroner's investigator responded to the hospital to certify the death, and the man's remains were later transported to the Lancaster County Forensic Center, where an autopsy is expected to be scheduled to help determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Long Road was closed to traffic in both directions between Landisville Road and South Colebrook Road for several hours Wednesday morning while officers conducted an accident reconstruction at the scene. Motorists in the area were asked to seek alternate routes until the roadway reopened later that morning.
East Hempfield Township police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the positioning of both the e-bike and the van at the time of impact. A full crash report on this incident is expected to be made available from the East Hempfield Township Police Department once the investigation concludes, and anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the department.
