Shrewsbury Township, PA – Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-83 After Downed Tree (September 29, 2026)

Emergency crews responded overnight to a series of vehicle crashes on Interstate 83 in York County after a large tree fell across the northbound travel lanes. Pennsylvania State Police, PennDOT, and the Maryland Department of Transportation assisted at the scene near mile marker 0.3 on I-83 northbound in Shrewsbury Township.

According to the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company, reports began reaching 911 dispatchers just before midnight after three separate vehicles struck the downed tree in quick succession while traveling north on the interstate in the dark. One person involved in the crashes was taken to York Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident, while the extent of injuries to others on scene was not detailed publicly.

Crews from Gordons Towing responded to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the tree from the roadway. PennDOT crews worked alongside state police and fire personnel through the overnight hours to restore the northbound lanes to normal traffic flow, and lanes were periodically restricted while the wreckage and debris were cleared from the travel lanes and shoulder.

Interstate 83 is a primary north-south highway linking York County to the Baltimore metropolitan area, and the stretch near mile marker 0.3 sits close to the Pennsylvania-Maryland state line. The overnight timing and darkness added to the difficulty of the roadway cleanup and vehicle recovery effort, and traffic in the area was affected for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene and inspect the roadway for further hazards.
