New Kingstown, PA – Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-81 Involving Tractor-Trailer (October 22, 2026)

A multi-vehicle crash shut down part of Interstate 81 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, near mile marker 55 in the New Kingstown area on the morning of October 22, 2026. The collision, which involved a tractor-trailer and at least one other vehicle, occurred in the southbound lanes of the interstate shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters from local volunteer companies responded to the scene along with multiple emergency medical services units after dispatch reports indicated a person may have been trapped inside one of the vehicles. Photographs shared by responding fire companies showed significant damage to at least one vehicle, with debris scattered across the roadway and shoulder. Southbound I-81 was closed in the area of mile marker 55 while crews worked to clear the wreckage, and the ramp from U.S. Route 11 at Exit 52B to Middlesex was temporarily shut down as a result.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation detoured traffic through a nearby exit while the highway remained closed and provided periodic updates as cleanup continued. The agency reported that most of the scene had been cleared by late morning, with a small number of crews remaining to finish cleanup work before the lanes were fully reopened to traffic.

At least one driver involved in the crash was taken to a hospital for treatment following the collision. The full extent of injuries sustained by those involved had not been publicly detailed. The Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene and opened an investigation into how the vehicles came to collide.

A full crash report is expected to be available from the Pennsylvania State Police once the investigation concludes. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the investigating agency.
