Silver Spring Township, PA – Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-81 (October 23, 2026)
A tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 81 northbound in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, early Friday morning, closing lanes for several hours and sending a driver to the hospital. The crash was reported around 5 a.m. near mile marker 55.8, close to Exit 52.
Fire crews responding to the scene found the tractor-trailer had overturned along the shoulder and travel lanes near the interchange. Authorities closed the northbound lanes of I-81 between Exit 52B, for Middlesex Township, and Exit 57, for Mechanicsburg, while crews worked to right the vehicle and clear debris from the roadway.
A driver involved in the crash was taken to a hospital for evaluation. PennDOT officials did not immediately disclose the extent of the injuries. Pennsylvania State Police and local fire companies remained on scene for several hours as cleanup continued.
The overturned tractor-trailer also caused secondary slowing in the southbound lanes near an emergency crossover, as passing drivers slowed to view the scene, according to a 511PA traffic alert. PennDOT initially estimated the highway would reopen by mid-morning, and the northbound lanes were back open within a few hours of the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. A full crash report is expected to be available from Pennsylvania State Police, Troop H, Carlisle. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact PSP Carlisle.
