South Middleton Township, PA – Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-81 (October 23, 2026)

A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 northbound in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, left one person dead and several others injured early Friday morning. The collision was reported around 7:20 a.m. near Exit 47, at the Hanover Street/Route 34 interchange.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, a chain-reaction collision developed when a vehicle struck slowing traffic ahead, setting off a pileup that ultimately involved roughly six vehicles, including a tractor-trailer and several passenger cars. Two of the vehicles caught fire during the crash, and emergency crews worked to extinguish the flames amid extensive wreckage along the roadway.

The Cumberland County Coroner's Office was called to the scene and confirmed one fatality. The identity of the person who died had not been released as agencies worked to notify next of kin. Other occupants involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals with injuries described by officials as critical.

Multiple fire departments and Pennsylvania State Police troopers from the Carlisle barracks responded to the interchange. All northbound lanes of I-81 were closed between Exit 47 and Exit 49 (Route 641/High Street) for roughly nine hours while crews cleared wreckage and investigated, with PennDOT reporting the roadway fully reopened by mid-afternoon. The crash occurred along a stretch of I-81 that is part of a planned $600 million PennDOT safety-improvement project for the Carlisle corridor, which includes lengthening entrance and exit ramps.
